Dudamel, conductor of LA Phil and John Williams, composer. e

Then with Brian Laurensen.  AT HOME with Dudamel and John Williams, which was lovely.

Dudamel says;  Music creates emotions for the listener…a journey in the imagination.  Contemplation. Nature. A new world.  Beauty in Nature!  We can appreciate , now! He has chosen Williams’ Juraissic Park for us to hear.

Williams:  I have my own experience in composing.  It was specific, animals, benign, beautiful, grazing… Feeling of seeing them for the first time./ 1.  Solemnity.  Regality.  Dignity.   2.  Trumpets. Fanfare.  Island in Juraissic. /
Our world is complicated.  Nature is so simple.

Dudamel. How is he spending this time?  Motivated.  Talks to friends on facetime.  Cooking in the house.  Working on musical scores.

Williams:    Composing, is on pause…work at home, alone, any way!
Just finished a violin concerto for Anne Sophie Mutter.
Now in process, doing processional for the ball in Vienna, which is usually a traditional Strauss.
Sense of time is contracted because it is not stretched.
I hope we become wiser, since our vulnerability has been attacked.
John Williams chooses Beethoven’s PASTORAL symphony, which is the only programmatic symphony he wrote. B loves the mountains, forests, lakes.  He has never seen a desert!  It is interpretive; awaken us, to wake up to the environment to see it…/

Dudamel:  Internalize nature in our spirit.  Crazy time.  But still there is inspiration in this moment.  Williams is a Mozart of our times.

Williams:  I chose Jupiter.  Mozart is a part of all of us!  The finale coalesces in a fabulous way.  Hearing Dudamel conduct this, it sounded exceptional.

Dudamel.  Spielberg.  Score was conducted by Dudamel.

Williams.  Historic trial for nation.  Listen to music.  Composer, Interpreter, Audience.

Dudamel.  Music plays a role in society.  Spiritual health will require music.  Harmony of notes and rhythms.
Post Covid 19:  Get to a better life and music will play a very important role in that transformation”

John Williams:  Music will always be a part of our humanity.

The broadcast is available on KDFC streaming live for two weeks.  Enjoy!
