Elephants AAM

I left this post in draft.  I had just returned from Myanmar and saw my first elephant with an invory tusk ; astonishing!  I was up close to the elephants in their preserve at the sacred site of Bordubur....they move so gracefully and have so much dignity, for an animal that weighs tons!  

Returned to AAM in SF to sese this exhibition....perhaps I will say more but it is now six months later, so will publish now.  From the Indian collection at the Asian Art Museum in SF.

at home in the Maybeck house(Guy Hyde Chick) of Foster Goldman, art collector

Visited again with Foster Goldman , at home, where we viewed new acquisitions, and he told me about his adventures with the exhibition in Vienna and in Berlin of the surreal piece which he in part carried on the plane and put in his luggage.  Its companion is in the MOMA, NYC and they will not let it travel in the 80 years it has been there; we know it as the "fur cup" by the same artist.  His luggage was lost, and then found, and the piece delivered safely to the museum, and it is now on display in Berlin.  The other news is that he has purchased two pieces from Vintage in Petaluma, that baroque porcelain, about which he has little information, but which he cherishes, and was the centerpiece with an orchid in it, on the table.  The new painting from the same source reminds him of a Wayne Thiebauld, was painted in Puerto Rico in the 1940s.  He has hired a young assistant whom I meet who is cataloguing his collection.   He is off to the Asia Week in NY...

Amy Tan, "Amazement", new novel. Arts and Lectures Series SF

Amy Tan spoke at the Norse Theater in the Arts and Lectures Series.   She is in conversation with Roy Eisenhardt.   A delight as always; Amy Tan  has such an unaffected delivery.   She says "coincidence" has played a large role in her inspirations for her novels.  She is searching for her identity; she does not want to forget people and events in her life.  She likes to preserve the method of Memory and the Moment.  She has been reading Walt Whitman and likes his search for "the Self".  She captures memory through a photo of her grandmother sitting on her desk and from her mother's stories. Rachmaninov's third concerto, the first movement in D is her favorite and  and she plays it every moring, before she starts to write.  She repeats one moment continually until she is through a passage in her novel...when she sits down to write, she knows where she is, when she turns on the music. YOSHIMASA and the Silver Pavilion. The Creation of the Soul of Japan. Donald Keene.

A friend's return to Japan through Donald Keene's Contemporary Lit anthologies, prompted me to read Donald Keene's illuminating appraisal of  Yoshimasa and The Silver Pavilion.  I visited the Silver Pavilion in Kyoto, though it is not Silver, nor was it ever silver, but wood, as this was not the Golden Age of the Golden Pavilion.  Yoshimasa and The Silver Pavilion. Ginkaku-ji  The Creation of the Soul of Japan. Donald Keene.    The imperial line from which Yoshimasa  descends includes the emperor of the Gold Pavilion Kinkaku-ji.  Yoshimitsui.  about which Mishima writes, and about which Philip Glass wrote the score to the film.  These are performed beautifully on piano by the Japanese pianist, Maki Namekawa.  Yoshimasa was considered a failure as a 15 th c. shogun emperor, because he was inept in war strategy and battles.
