Orchids

These are the orchids I now have blooming.   Consulting my THE WAY OF CHINESE PAINTING from the 17th c Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting by Mai -mai Sze, In DIscussions of the Fundamentals of Orchid Painting, "Dotting the heart of the orchid is like drawing in the eyes of a beautiful woman...H.D.Thoreau and John Clare confined their attention to the wild orchids which they found represented  as "fair and delicate, nymph like" unspoiled nature.

I bought an orchid book, Mark Griffiths, published by the Royal Horticultural Society Archives  so photographed these orchids close up, to be able to identify them.  as a cymbidium, most common in Viet Nam China and Thailand. The other three are odontonia hybrids or odontcidiums  These particular orchids come from Salinas, California, and those not from Asia are from South American species.

Chueh Yin, Buddhist monk, Yuan period, says:  "When the emotions are strong and one feels pent up, one should paint(write)bamboo; in a light mood one should paint the orchid, for the leaves of the orchid grow as though they were flying and fluttering, the buds open joyfully, and the mood is indeed a happy one. "  He is right; orchids blooming make me very happy.  I can increase my happiness with the presence or orchids in my home.

A few lines from the rules of painting the orchid..."The secret of painting the orchid rests basicallly in the circulation of the spirit (Chi yun).  Ink tones should be varied.  Old and young leaves should mingle.  Petals should be light, stamens and calyz dark.  The hand should move like lightning; it should never be slow or hesitant.   Everything depends on structure and style(shih) by means of the brush....Flowers in wind or sunlight are elegant.  Stems and leaves should have movement like the tail of a soaring phoenix; the calyx should be light as a dragonfly. "
