The Asia Society of Northern California held its Christmas or holiday event at a gallery on Jesse Street, right near the Academy of Art, and the Palace Hotel, showcasing an Indian artist, Ranu  Mukajuree, in "Apparitions" -- The artist  has just won a poster contest for Market Street, so her work will be seen on a two mile strip.   Asia Society Executive Director  Bruce Pickering and I exchanged greetings. Sherry the educational curator at the Berkeley Art Museum was enjoying the reception and exhibition.  Nice introduction to Wendi Norris and her gallery, which is associated with the project in NYC of which Leeza Ahmady is the director or the ACA.  Nice festive evening.

THe show is on from November 14-December 21.  The exhibition features "a vibrant array of innovative textiles prints, paintings, collage and a hybrid film, focussing on mythological, socio-economic and natural imagery, articulating relationships between the compressed spaces of the body, stage and picture plane...conduits between a real and barely imaginable world."

Yanaihara Isaku was 38 years old at the beginning of his stay in Paris. A recommendation of Jean Wahl had allowed him to get a scholarship from CNRS. In his homeland, he taught philosophy at the University of Osaka; he wrote and meditated about Rouault, Kierkegaard, Sartre and Camus which he translated  The Myth of Sisyphus  . After the parenthesis of a trip to Greece and Italy, he had agreed to pose for the artist he met at an exhibition for autumn 1955. Reading: An Englishwoman in California. Jane Austen's Niece !

Having discovered, to my  great surprise,  this book and author upon my first visit to the California Book Society on Sutter Street, a year ago,  and having met the editor of the edition, Zoe Klippert, I subsequently purchased the Letters of Catherine Hubback 1871-76 which were housed in the Bodleian Library in Oxford University, where Zoe was taking a summer course. The lecturer, a librarian brought to her attention that there was a portfolio of letters by a descendant of Jane Austen's family who had gone to America that was unpublished..  She subsequently transcribed the script and the Bodlein library published the letters in 2010  . With the arrival of my co editor of the RAS (Royal Asiatic Society) Journal in Shanghai, in 2010, Fiona Lindsay Shen, who is a "Scotswoman", to the LA area in August, I picked up the book again, and this time, read it with more relish.  Thinking of her and her sons, in California, after their years in Shanghai, I enjoyed ...

Following in the Bartrams' Footsteps

"The Legacy of the Bartrams" with Carol Woodin, ASBA(American Society of Botanical Art)   Exhibitions Director,    A very well presented lecture. The first exhibition to be presented in the newly moved Girtin Hall to the site of the Botanical Garden and very well received to find these works of art, in a work of art.   143 artists submitted works, ascribed to selected works by Bartram, which they were to reinterpret, and 43 were chosen.  The show has been at Bartrams Garden in Philadelphia, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and in Florida,among its venues. The show and the lecture brought back many memories of the happy hours I spent in Bartram's garden and of the lecture I presented there for the anniversary celebration and how Bartram led me to following Linnaeus in Sweden and learning how many specimens from North America are in the Kew Gardens, due to the correspondence. .
